I wish I had a sunny yard.

I wish I had this yard.  This sunny lawn is worth having beyond the fact that it is located along a beach somewhere in Malaysia.  The awesome part is that there is plenty of room for a garden.  I would LOVE to have a big sunny yard in which I could grow edible things.  Since I have lived in Missouri, I have had gloriously tree covered yards that are nothing less than “full shade”.  Although I appreciate the shade for activities like sitting with a glass of ice water on a hot day, it is depressing to not be able to grow tomatoes.  Much less dill weed.

As you all have probably figured out, I am a blog lover.  I recently discovered The Pioneer Woman (and her blog), and though her recipes are full of flavor, they are also (often) full of fat.  So tread carefully through those calorie traps.  She DOES, however, have lots of other interesting tutorials…like this raised garden bed:

If you aren’t super handy, she has really great pictures that help.  A lot of the materials you’ll need for this project can be re-purposed or found for pretty cheap.  Think of all the calories you can burn putting this together…and think of all the healthy calories you can consume once you get to grow your own foods!

Makes me excited for spring…I’m sure spring is out there somewhere…hiding under the snow! :)

Okay, let’s try this again.

I have been as bad as some of you and probably worse than most.  Yesterday I went to the doctor’s office because of a flu/cold/sinus thing.  I felt awful…but not as awful as I felt when I stepped on the scales.  Talk about insult to injury.  And that was after this bug had killed my appetite for a few days.  It just goes to show how quickly our progress can get undone.

In an attempt to motivate myself, I took some time over the weekend to read up on a few of the New York Times bestsellers in the self-help section.  I’ll share the two I find most promising.  I think I’ll go over to the mall and look them over, maybe buy one of them, and carry it with me while I do some mall walking.  Hey: if mall walking is good enough for my grandparents, it’s good enough for me.

Okay.  Now for the books!

400 Calorie Fix:

The Easy New Rule

for Permanent Weight Loss!

Book  Pick #1

This book is by LIZ VACCARIELLO and MINDY HERMANN.  Vaccariello is actually a former editor-in-chief of Prevention magazine.  My mother has gotten Prevention for years, and for such a physically small publication, it is always chock full of health related research and advice.  This book supposedly reads a lot like the “Eat This, Not That” series, with lots of pictures, and helpful information for folks who eat pre-packaged foods.  I can’t get enough of those glossy little books, so I am excited to see what this one has to offer.  This books also aims to help visualize portion control and awareness of calories, hence the “400 Calorie” title.

Book Pick #2:

This book is by Kris Carr, the author of best-selling cancer survival guidebooks and host of a TLC documentary.  Her books have been acclaimed by all sorts of folks, from Dr. Oz and Oprah Winfrey, to Donna Karan  and Sheryl Crow.  She specializes in cleansing, raw food, and veganism, which I know may not appeal to the masses, but I am really intrigued by this book.  From the reviews, it seems to be well-liked, even by folks who didn’t expect to.  I’ve been mostly vegetarian for about 13 years, so I am excited to see what kind of new information there is out there for me to learn about.
